“I’m from the United States, and one time during a long layover in Amsterdam, an elderly Dutch lady sat down on a bench next to me. She went into her purse for some chocolate and gave it to me, then asked me in English to please eat it because she wanted to tell me something. She was born in 1939, but never even tasted chocolate until she was six years old.”

“When she did, it was called Hershey and was given to her and her sibling by an American soldier while their town was being liberated by Americans. She’d been keeping some chocolate in her purse for decades so she could give some to Americans when she got the chance because she wanted to say thank you. I did ask about other Allies, and she said she was grateful to all the Allies who liberated the Netherlands, but Americans were special to her because just one American soldier gave up his chocolate so they could try some.”
