There can be a multitude of things we’re looking to get out of a ski or snowboarding trip; and my takeaway from LAAX is that it’s pretty much got all of them covered.
On the trip over to LAAX, I didn’t particularly know what to expect, but what I was first struck by was how easy to was to get there from Zurich on public transport. One incredibly scenic train, a bus journey, and a few relaxed hours and you’re in the resort.
I stayed at rocksresort, a sustainably built set of apartments embedded into the mountains, that form part of a little village with shops, bars, and restaurants mere meters away. The apartment itself was incredibly comfortable, with all the amenities required for a trip of any length.
The apartments vary from double rooms to entire studio apartments that can comfortably sleep eight, complete with a fully functional kitchen.
As an intermediate who’d not been skiing in years, the lower section of the mountain was a perfect place to get my bearings, with easier slopes for beginners and out-of-practice skiers (like me), to get to grips.
What separates LAAX from any other resort I can think of, is its dedication to freestyle. Boasting the one-of-a-kind half-pipe, freestyle is woven into the foundations of LAAX.
Freestyle isn’t just confined to the slopes at LAAX: built underneath the resort itself is its freestyle academy, complete with entire skate park, vert, parkour course, and trampolining arena to enjoy too.
Off the slopes, there are also more relaxing activities, one being a walk along the Senda dil Dragun; the longest treetop walk in the world.
If you’re looking for some rest and relaxation, LAAX has got you covered. At Rocksresort, we took advantage of the spa services located metres away at Signinahotel. In terms of food and drink, there are options aplenty both up and down the mountain.
One thing I found refreshing about LAAX was the range of food options available. Having previously skied at other resorts, as a vegetarian, I found myself struggling to find suitable food around the mountain, especially after expelling all the energy of a day on the slopes. Well, at LAAX this was no issue.
One unique aspect of LAAX, is its commitment to be as sustainable as possible. With Rocksresort and the freestyle academy being built with as many locally sourced resources as possible.
While the snowboarding and skiing are the star of the show during winter at LAAX, I couldn’t help thinking how beautiful a summertime excursion to the resort would be – with a wide array of hiking trails and activities to enjoy. The worst thing about LAAX was having to leave, but rest assured, I’ll be back!
